Yokohama was synonymous with the silk trade from the opening of the port in 1859 until World War I. During this period, up to 80% of Japan’s silk exports flowed through Yokohama and more raw silk was exported to France than to any other overseas market, creating an interdependent relationship between Japan and France.
This talk will look at the activities of the French exporters in Yokohama during those first 50 years of silk trade.
Our speaker, Christian Polak, is the founder and president of SÉRIC. He has been living in Japan since 1971, obtained his PhD from Hitotsubashi National University, and has worked as an advisor to various government bodies. Christian has published numerous books and has received a number of awards from both France and Japan. His collection of publications and other items relating to France and Japan is irreplaceable.
The talk will be held at the Yokohama Country & Athletic Club (YC&AC) on Saturday June 10, starting at 2:00 pm. Maximum capacity is 60 people.
