American and British descriptions of visits to Yokohama and Japan in the 19th and early 20th centuries
Thursday, November 30, 7:00 PM
With speaker Tom Gally
“When Japan opened to the outside world in the mid-19th century, people in the West were curious about this previously little-known country. Many foreign visitors and long-term residents tried to satisfy that curiosity by publishing written accounts of their stays. Japan As They Saw It collects excerpts from those accounts.” — Tom Gally, https://gally.net/jatsi/
In addition to its fascinating collection of excerpts, Japan As They Saw It also provides links to the books from which those excerpts were sourced (and to many others), making the platform probably the most comprehensive collection of links to online books in English about Japan from the 19th and early 20th centuries.
On Thursday, November 30, Tom Gally, the creator of Japan As They Saw It, will give a talk on the project, including a discussion of some interesting accounts of Yokohama specifically.
The talk will be in English and will be followed by a Q & A session. Maximum capacity at the YC&AC venue is 54 people. To attend, please complete the form at the link below.
Admission to the talk is free. Food may be purchased from the YC&AC restaurant on the ground floor. (We recommend you arrive by 18:00 latest in case the restaurant is busy.) For drinks, a cash bar will be available in the function room from 18:00 onwards.
