ジャパン・ブルワリー・カンパニーの知られざる歴史とYC&ACクリケット選手たちの重要な役割
Thursday, Sept. 18, 7:00 PM
Speaker: Mike Galbraith
I became interested in Japan Brewery Company in around 2013 while researching into the background of the Yokohama sportsman ‘E. Abbott’ because he was clearly a great athlete. One reason he was very difficult to track down was that he was born in Boulogne in France. In my internet search results I found Abbott and references to Japan Brewery Company (JBC). Amazingly Kirin not only holds a lot of the original management records from the very start of JBC but it has also placed them online.
The first record is the initial prospectus used for gathering investors, and at the bottom are just two names: E. Abbott and W. H. Talbot. However, when I searched for the early history of Kirin Brewery I found that it seems to be generally believed prominent figures like Thomas Glover, Yanosuke Iwasaki and even Eiichi Shibusawa were involved in the start of JBC.
In around 2015 I got an introduction to the Kirin archivist and passed her all the info on Abbott that I had. I was told that, of course, they knew the names of Abbott and Talbot but didn’t know anything about them. The archivist then changed Kirin’s website and recognized Abbott and Talbot as founders, but the remarkable history of JBC remains untold.
