The Birth of Japan’s Railways and the Development of Rail Transport in Yokohama

“Railways have been integral to every part of life in Japan for the past 150 years. Like so many other aspects of the Meiji period modernization, rail transport began in Yokohama and represented a marriage of Western technology and Japanese ingenuity. As we mark the sesquicentennial of Japanese railways this month, let’s look back at how they all started, tracing their development from the steam locomotive to the Shinkansen, from horse-drawn trams to the Minatomirai line, and through all three Yokohama Stations.”

On the 150th anniversary of the opening of the railway line between Sakuragicho (Yokohama) and Shimbashi (Tokyo), the Yokohama History Society will hold its second talk. The well-known local railway enthusiast Mr. Glenn Scoggins will be our speaker.

The event is being hosted by the Yokohama Country & Athletic Club (YC&AC) in the Club’s second-floor function room and adjoining roof deck. Admission to the talk is free to YC&AC members and non-members alike.

Food may be purchased from the YC&AC restaurant on the ground floor. (We recommend you arrive by 18:00 latest in case the restaurant is busy.) For drinks, a cash bar will be available in the function room from 18:00 onwards.
